Story of a Nanny State and its Sympathizers
I believe Bangladesh has become more radicalized in last one decade. Under the jackboot of Awami League regime, nobody is really safe. Not even the ones in the functionary bodies who are sympathizing highhandedness of Awami-league for AL has taken scores of developmental projects around the world. This thing always baffles me that why even the repressed citizens are supporting their repressors.
Awami League has created a paranoid perception of fear among citizens : about everything. Let's go back to 2008 when Awami League first came to the power by capitalizing on the fact that BNP is a communal party. I was only in my first or second grade back to then. But I clearly remember watching a BTV (Bangladesh Television Program) program that used to broadcast about the atrocities that had been committed by the previous government (BNP and caretaker government). Let me clear : the program used to broadcast on say 23 January the atrocities committed by BNP in the previous years. They continued this program for a very long time. Having gained unequivocal support from secular, progressive and minority quarters of the society, they kept a firm grip on the power for the abovementioned factions of the society was just out of BNP regime and believed that Awami League would deliver on its promises about building a truly progressive and inclusive society. The rise of state backed Gonojagoron Moncho most clearly captures the zeitgeist of that time. After almost more than half decade later, people are still in dark about who actually were behind the foundation of GM. Even though, infuriated people initially started this, Awami League was successful capturing the momentum of this protest. So they actively backed the protest because it provided with them two fold advantage for they took political mileage, by backing a activism that was protesting against war criminals. And at that same time, Awami League took this chance to protray BNP as party opposing justice related to war criminials.
